Up Close and Personal

As a child, remember watching Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews? In one particular scene, the actress sings to a mechanical robin redbreast. The idea of the amazing nanny being able to communicate with her feathery friends adds to the overall magic of the movie. Children are enthralled with the idea of being up close and personal with nature.  Now, imagination can become reality, with window bird feeders.

Although some window feeders require the window to remain open, one model allows the window to remain closed. With a center-locking lid, the feeder is easily accessible for cleaning and filling, from inside the home. Made of high quality cedar wood, the feeder also hosts a one-way mirror.  While people are watching the birds, the feathered vertebrates see the yard. However, the mirror is

not the width of the window.  So, individuals must remain perfectly motionless and silent.  Otherwise, the birds will be startled by the motion and flit away.

Some window feeders have certain specifications for the house window.  For example, one feeder requires the window to be 24 x 39 inches, and the window must be able to open at least a foot.  In addition, the sill and frame should be 1.5-2 inches in depth for mounting purposes. So, before investing in a window bird feeder, double check the installation requirements.

One type of window bird feeder has simple installation instructions. The box has strong and durable suction cups, to adhere to the window.  Also, the entire feeder is constructed with a virtually unbreakable UV stabilized polycarbonate. Clear in structure, an overhanging roof protects the seeds, and the birds, from inclement weather. In the event rain blows over the seeds, draining holes in the bottom will help keep the food fresh and dry. The see-through material allows for an unobstructed view of beautiful birds.  Within touching distance, the birds are easily observed, without disturbing a yummy meal. The entire family can enjoy the frequent flyers up close and personal.

Window feeders, with tension rods, are also a popular choice for many bird enthusiasts. The feeder can be installed in any window, up to 3 feet, from inside the home.  However, one major drawback is the position of the window. The pane must stay open at all times. For many areas of the country, the tension rod attached feeders are simply impractical.

Finally, seeing hummingbirds up close and personal is practically impossible. With wings that beat approximately 55 times per second, the little creatures dart quickly from flower to flower.  Thus, a window bird feeder provides and opportunity for a real treat. The birds will hover and perch right before the observer's eyes, and provide a few precious minutes of unobstructed pleasure, for both bird and benefactor.

As long as window feeders are kept clean and filled with delectable delights, birds will come extremely close. By teaching the entire family to remain still and quiet, the birds will allow a rare and close-up view of nature's finest residents. Finding a ready source of nourishment, birds will continue to return for daily meals. Consider installing window feeders near a favorite chair.  Regardless of the type of window feeder used, birds will flock to a ready meal.  Then, like Julie Andrew's make believe conversation with the robin in Mary Poppins, people can sit for hours and commune with one of the most delicate creatures on the planet.
