Reading for Gardening Success

Many people enjoy have a yard equaling the beauty of the home. Nevertheless, not all individuals are born with the proverbial "green thumb".  The desire and willingness to work are present - now what? For a fortunate few, a friend or family member is easily accessible for gardening advice. For the rest, reading magazines, books, and Internet sources are the answer.

Gardening magazines can be readily found at any supermarket or books store.  The cover generally informs the reader of the major topic within the covers.  For example, during planting season, the publication will probably give helpful hints to have the greatest success cultivating the garden.  Inside the front cover, the table of contents will usually give a brief synopsis of the articles. Fellow gardeners pen the information.  Nevertheless,
magazines are often centered on one major topic per issue.  Thus, books may be the solution.

The local public library is an excellent place to begin looking for the exact book, to answer a specific question.  With advances in technology, card catalogs are now computerized. A brief stop to enter a few keywords will let the searcher know if the right book is available.  If computers are intimidating, librarians are available to help with sleuthing and perusing the shelves.

Sometimes, the right book is found, but the library does not stock the volume.  No problem!  Most libraries have an agreement with other libraries to share books.  A simple call, or e-mail message, and the book is on the way.  In a few days, a return visit will put the book in the gardener's hand.

Libraries are great, but owning a reference book is frequently preferable.  With a title in hand, a visit to the bookstore will add to the horticulturist's library.  If the book is not readily available, good customer service means a helpful salesperson can order the volume. If the book seems too expensive, a visit to the Internet may reveal a used volume, or a cheaper used book.

Unfortunately, people plagued by a question often have a difficult time finding a specific answer in a magazine or book.  Now, a little research on the Internet may be necessary.  In most cases, a keyword search will yield a plethora of information.  Now the problem is weeding through all the information.  Patience.  A beautiful garden will be worth all of an individual's advanced planning and questioning. Also, many gardening sites will have an e-mail address or phone number to contact an individual to answer pertinent questions.

Finally, a thorough search of magazines, books, and the Internet have provided information the gardener is seeking-now what?  Well, the person can take the information and simply plant a garden.  On the other hand, maybe an avid gardener will consider sharing the information with others in the world of plants. Therefore, consider putting the research to profitable use, and write a book. Providing the information will save another individual from spending countless hours trying to find specific answers to similar questions.  With the royalties from a published volume, a gardener can buy plenty of seeds and plants for even more beautiful gardens.

In summary, gardens often have questions, needing a specific answer.  So, during the next grocery-shopping trip, scan the magazine section for an issue published by expert gardeners.  If the magazine section cannot provide the desired information, go to the local library.  Oftentimes, the library will have a plethora of gardening books for immediate perusal.  If not, the library may have the ability to have the book ordered from a neighboring library. In the event a library does not carry the volume, or owning the reference book is preferable, visit the local bookstore. However, when all else fails, the Internet is almost an inexhaustible source of information. Now, sharing the information is the only idea standing between the gardener and a bountiful crop and a gorgeous landscape.
