Preparing to Plant

Preparing to plant a garden is as important as the actual process.  Unprepared, cultivating can be a lengthy and arduous task. Unexpected surprises can take the joy out of gardening.  Planters need to have the proper tools, accessories, time, and supplies to give even the smallest garden the best opportunity to flourish.

When novices consider buying gardening tools, a rake, a hoe, and a shovel immediately come to mind. However, seasoned gardeners know other important tools will definitely come in handy. For instance, a hand fork is excellent for turning the soil in tight places, and the fork helps dislodge weeds for easier pulling. Also, pruning shears will help clip back thorny rose branches, pruning back flowers and plants for a greater yield; a trowel is used to dig holes for planting or digging up bulbs for
replanting in a different location next season. So, depending on the gardening plans, have the proper tools to accomplish the task in an enjoyable manner.

In addition to the proper tools, gardeners need a few accessories to keep gardening a pleasure, and not a painful chore.  Individuals are so concerned with the planting, personal care is not considered.  For example, a good straw hat will help prevent heat related illnesses and sunburn. Also, loose fitting clothes for getting down in the dirt.

When gardening, clothing should also include a good pair of gardening gloves. Gardening can be hard on hands. Soil gets embedded under the fingernails, which are probably chipped from digging around plants and weeds.  Gloves also protect hands from the prickly thorns on a gorgeous rose bush. Gloves also keep pesticides away from the skin.  Although gardeners would prefer not to use pesticides, an infestation of harvest wrecking scavengers leaves little choice. Fortunately, some available pesticides are non-toxic, or made from natural ingredients around the home.  With a little homework, gardeners can get rid of the bugs, preserve the harvest, and have healthy produce for the kitchen table.

While gardening gloves protect hands, horticulturists also need to consider feet.  Gardening shoes need to be serviceable, not fashionable.  Preferably, the shoes are easily cleaned after a day in the soil and mud.  Taken off at the door, a good pair of gardening footwear can be easily hosed down or wiped off.  However, if the plants, weeds, or thorns are irritating the skin, a pair of gardening boots will be necessary.  Protecting the plants is part of being a good gardener, but the individual first needs the right protection.

Armed with the proper tools, and dressed for the occasion, a gardener should allow ample time to complete the task at hand. For example, planting seeds or starter plants will take time. In a rush, the holes may be dug shallow, or not have the proper mulch. Also, time may escape before the last vegetable can be planted.  Then, the gardener will have to make sure the plant is safely potted until another day.  Also, gardeners have to allow for clean up time.  Therefore, allow enough time to complete a gardening chore, so the experience is relaxing and enjoyable, rather than stressful.

Finally, before starting a gardening project, have the necessary supplies readily available.  Frustration will be the emotion of the day, if planting is constantly interrupted with frequent trips to the shed for tools, mulch, fertilizer, watering can, or whatever is needed at the time.  Especially for the elderly or arthritic, getting up and down is extremely taxing.  With proper preparation beforehand, gardening can still be a peaceful hobby.

In summary, a good gardener is always prepared with the proper tools, plus suitable and protective clothing.  Additionally, working on the garden is a time to relax, not a rushed chore with limited time. Then, to make sure gardening is not frustrating, an experience gardener will make sure all the necessary supplies are available before starting a project. With a little advanced planning, gardening will remain a pleasurable hobby with rewards to reap.
