How Do I Garden?

Gardening is a very personal choice; a demonstration of creativity; a labor of love; a contribution to a healthier diet and a healthier budget; Gardening is an individual experience. Therefore, the answer for the proper way to garden is dependent on the individual horticulturist. In order to appreciate the ultimate fruits of labor, a gardener, whether novice or experienced, is committed, filled with specific expectations, willing to learn, and awed by nature.

If an individual truly desires a garden to reach fruition, commitment is definitely a must. Simply planting a seed, and occasionally dousing the area with water, is not enough.  Young plants of any sort, except for weeds, need a little tender loving care. Certainly, the hardiest of seeds will sprout, regardless of neglect, but the harvest or the visual
beauty will not be worth the initial effort.  Without commitment, the better part of valor is to buy produce at the market, and pay an occasional visit to the local florist.

Committed to planting and nurturing a garden, individuals need to have a clear plan, with specific expectations.  Haphazardly planting a garden will likely result in unexpected results.  Gardeners need to exercise advanced planning.  First, how big is the plot for planting, and where is the garden going to be located.  For instance, with limited space, a novice gardener might accidentally buy more seeds or seedlings than the plot can support.  Also, gardening in a shady area presents different dynamics than a garden in an open, sunny spot. While a sunny spot may need a little extra watering to give the plants enough moisture, a shady spot may need rocks planted below the roots, to allow for extra drainage, so the roots will not rot.

In addition to the location of the garden, know what kind of garden is best for individual circumstances, and the greenery most likely to appreciate the choice.  For example, plants requiring a longer growing cycle will likely not do well in colder climates.  However, hardier plants like evergreen will do well.  Similarly, a cactus will probably die if planted in an area with a snowy winter climate.

In addition to the proper type of plants, a gardener needs to know the potential yield. Tomatoes are an excellent example of potential over planting.  One healthy tomato plant will produce a lot of the juicy red fruit.  However, novice gardeners often plant too many plants, hoping for an equal/double the number of tomatoes.  Instead, the individual and family members will be eating fresh and canned tomatoes to the exclusion of all else.  One plant will yield clusters of tomatoes, not simply one or two.  Therefore, gardeners need to be committed to the gardening process, learning what to expect, so the garden will be a blessing. Nobody wants a meager garden, nor do people expect an invasion of vegetables or flowers to dominate life.

To avoid various gardening challenges or invasions, while enjoying the process to the fullest, gardeners should be willing to learn.  For instance, if pests begin to invade the produce, what is the best organic solution to the problem; if the weather turns prematurely cold, how can an individual protect the plants until harvest; what flowers grow best in a particular climate; and what is the best kind of mulch? A gardener must be willing to learn the information necessary to give plants an optimal chance to mature, whether the garden contains vegetables for the dinner table, or flowers for the centerpiece.

Finally, to properly appreciate gardening, an individual must possess a certain awe for nature to fully enjoy the entire process. Consider the wonder of plant a small, insignificant seed, and after a little water and sunshine, a small green shoot appears.  Before long, the shoot has developed into a tall, mature plant.  Then, in the span of a few short weeks, the plant is yielding yummy produce of fragrant and colorful blossoms-all from the seemingly insignificant seed.  Without a doubt, the process is awesome to witness and be an active participant.

In essence, how to garden depends on the individual. Planted in a certain-sized plot, in a specific space, gardeners will have to determine what potential yield is feasible, and the amount of plants needed to reach the harvest goal. Even the experienced gardener has to plan ahead and be willing to learn new information designed to help the garden reach full potential. However, regardless of anything else, a gardener should have a true appreciation for nature, in order to fully enjoy the opportunity to cultivate plants and witness the growth process from beginning to end. Gardening is definitely a labor of love.
