Home Sweet Home

For avid birdwatchers, feeding birds is the best way to ensure frequent visits from feathery friends.  Supplied with a ready source of nutrition, the birds will likely return on a daily basis to enthrall their human benefactors. However, with full tummies, the birds will leave and return home.  Individuals wanting to create a backyard sanctuary for the amazing little animals obviously need to provide more than a tasty meal. Like people, birds also need a place to eat, sleep, and raise a family. So, if a birdwatcher wishes to observe birds in every aspect of living, the birds must be able to call the backyard home, not simply a place to dine out.  Therefore, to provide birds with a true home, consider purchasing a birdbath and heater, a bird table, birdhouses, complete with decks.
Birds are not unlike their human counterparts.  After a good meal, the proper action is to clean up. Birdbaths are wonderful additions to a backyard devoted to birds.  The birds will stop to drink, bath, preen their feathers, cool off, or simply have fun.  The natural mannerisms and antics of birds are easily observable as the flighty creatures take time to refresh at a birdbath.  However, along with supplying a birdbath comes responsibility.  The water will need changed daily.

In addition to keeping the water clean and fresh, homeowners in colder climates have the added chore of keeping the water from freezing.  Some birds do not fly south for the winter. If a fresh supply of food and water is available, the birds will probably become permanent neighbors. So, keep the water from freezing with a birdbath heater.  Depending on the budget, heaters can be turned on when the need arises, or the more expense heaters will keep the water at a constant temperature.  While automatic is much easier, other heaters are manually controlled.  The choice belongs to the sanctuary provider.

Either during or after a good meal, some bird species love to socialize. Birds often flock together for safety reasons as well. When creating a sanctuary for birds, a table may be a good choice.  With a bird table, people can supply extra treats like bread, fruit, and sweats not normally able to fit in a feeder. Unfortunately, scavengers and predators will also appreciate the table.  Therefore, a solution may be to put the table on a pole, away from trees and bushes, and with a pole to slick to climb.  Birds will enjoy the table in relative peace.

After a good meal, a refreshing bath, and a little socialization, birds need a place to rest, sleep, and raise a family. Thus, birdhouses are essential for birds to set up permanent residency in the back yard.  The houses can be as simple, or as ornate, as the homeowner wishes.  Birdhouse kits can be purchased at many hobby stores or through the Internet.  Creating the homes can become a family project or a quiet hobby. The houses can be simply made of a plain wood, or decoratively painted with a non-toxic paint. Painted, the houses can reflect the benefactor's personality, or a theme for the sanctuary. Bright colors will also serve to attract some species of birds.

Along with brightly colored homes, some birdwatchers try to make the birdhouses into miniature mansions, with room for more than one family, and a deck for the birds to get fresh air, and the birdwatchers to observe the birds at rest.  However, before building a deck, or purchasing an elaborate birdhouse, keep safety in mind.  While the birdhouse may be awesome to look at, the birds will be much safer without a big deck. With a big deck, the birds' natural enemies will have greater opportunities to land near their prey, and cause death and destruction. Thus simple perches around the birdhouse may be a better choice.

In conclusion, feeding birds is a wonderful means of benefiting little wonders of nature, while enjoying the added benefit of observing creatures in the wild.  However, if an individual wants the occasional birds to become permanent residents in his/her yard, providing fresh water for drinking a bathing is essential.  Also, the birds need to have a place to live and socialize. Thus, birdhouses and bird tables will temp the feathered friends to make a change of address, and call the backyard "home, sweet home". Instead of simply watching birds eat, bird lovers can create a backyard paradise for observing birds in their natural environment, every day throughout the year.
