Store Bought and Homemade Feeders

For many homeowners, the beauty of the outside equals the interior décor.  The yard is gorgeously landscaped to send a message of love and peace. Visiting a beautiful garden is fragrant and relaxing. If time allows, a person can spend an entire day simply enjoying the beauties of nature. Likewise, birds will flock to a garden with a safe and inviting atmosphere. Free to enjoy a snack of tasty seeds uninterrupted, the birds will continually return for another helping, if the feed is tempting and easily accessible.  So, homeowners can create a veritable bird sanctuary with either store bought or homemade feeders.

With a lifetime warranty, bird enthusiasts often choose Droll Yankee bird feeders and supplies. The extensive inventory will fit any pocketbook, and provide food for a variety of feathery feasters.  A
simple feeder can be purchased for six dollars, and a more extravagant model is around eighty.  Also, the feeders are designed to attract certain birds.  For example, the Little Flyer is specifically designed to entice the elusive little hummingbirds.  Although the container is clear, for monitoring the need for refills, the top is decorated with red bloom feeding ports.  Unable to resist the vibrant color, hummingbirds will not be able to deny their curious nature.

Droll also has feeders available for the curious observer.  For instance, the Observer window feeder is excellent for the individual who may be homebound.  Unable to reach the garden quickly, many homeowners miss seeing the birds at rest. Flying past the window, as they come and go, birds do not slow down enough to view in detail, unless they are eating. Therefore, droll made a feeder specifically designed to attach to the window with suction cups.  The clear container lets the individual know when more seed is needed.  The clear overhang protects the birds from inclement weather.

The weather is not the only protection the birds need, in order to feel safe in the garden.  Scavengers and predators will also come for the seeds and a good meal. Squirrels are probably the worst offender. If the little varmints can reach the seeds, nothing will be left for the birds.  No problem!  Droll also manufactures feeders capable of deterring the peskiest rodents. The Jagunda feeder is squirrel-proof, if placed at least eight feet from trees or buildings.

Although seed trays are cheaper, and can be easily made at home, the trays are also a temptation for predators and thieves.  If a tray feeder is used, people are responsible for guarding the defenseless birds.  For example, neighborhood cats will take advantage of a bird bribe.  While the birds are eating, cats and other bird eaters will also be planning the next meal. Therefore, purchase an enticing feeder, designed to keep birds safe for hours of bird watching pleasure.

As beginning bird watchers, many people do not know what birds live in the area, or what particular birds prefer to eat.  Therefore, investing in a store bought feeder is a future consideration.  Until the species and population of the local birds is known, simple homemade feeders will still bring birds to the backyard.

The easiest bird feeder to create is the ground feeder.  Simply, put the food on a tray, in the middle of the yard. However, without some kind of covering, little seed will be left for future feathery friends. Also, the birds are sitting ducks for the predator's  breakfast.

Probably the most popular homemade snack is the suet feeder. Kids will have fun making the pinecone feeders.  Slathered with peanut butter and rolled in seeds, kids can hang pinecones outside the bedroom window, for a little private observation of beautiful birds.  A similar idea is the suet feeder made with boiled fat, combined with fruit, nuts, and peanut butter for a high-energy repast. The balled mixture is placed in an onion bag, or something similar, and hung outside for the winged guests.

For the gourmet, consider making the birds a sumptuous shish cabob. String fruits, vegetables, and suet on a hook, and place within an easy observation vantage point.  Watch the birds flock to a unique taste sensation. Give the amazing creatures and irresistible invitation to dinner.

In summary, whether an individual chooses a store bought feeder, like the Droll Yankee, or a child's homemade suet treat, the ultimate purpose is to provide a safe and peaceful place to rest and eat. Then, individuals can enjoy watching the birds in their natural state.  Invite them, and the flighty friends will come.
