Bird Watching:  Be Prepared

Birds are fascinating creatures.  Coming in all different shapes, sizes, and colors, birds are fun and relaxing to watch. People have built small home aviaries to watch small canaries or parakeets.  However, avid birdwatchers have a more natural environment in mind. With over 500 National wildlife preserves in America alone, individuals have ample destinations for observing wild birds in their natural habitat. Visiting a nature reserve, or a bird sanctuary, is an excellent opportunity to view the feathered friends.  For people unable to travel far from home, the local park can also be home to many species of birds. No matter where people go, bird watching means being prepare in advance with adequate information and the proper equipment.

Bird watching requires a lot of patient, quiet sitting, and knowing where to walk and how to move, in
order to see the birds before the flighty little creatures wing their way out of sight.  In many cases, birdwatchers have to leave the car and proceed afoot into a more natural habitat.  Also, unless the watchers can quickly move arm and shoulders to follow the birds, catching the birds in flight will be very difficult.  Contrary to uninformed opinions, bird watching is both a sedentary and physical sport.

Next, gathering information, before bird watching, can make the experience more enjoyable. Whether in America or abroad, do a little research.  Find out what birds live in the local area. Determine the nesting practices and where the nests will be located, if the season is appropriate. Find out what time of day is best for observing the birds. Essentially, find out as much about the birds as possible.  While the Internet is an excellent way to gather information, local libraries are an excellent source of information. Also, go straight to the source.  Call the local area, a visitors' center or a chamber of commerce and ask questions.

In addition to information about the local feathered wildlife, make sure the local accommodations are suitable. For instance, birdwatchers tend to rise early. Will food, gas, and other travel services be available when needed?  Armed with information regarding the local birds, and after verifying local accommodations, make sure the proper equipment is available.

First, dress to blend in with the environment. Naturally, the birds are more likely to become visible, if nothing is out of the ordinary and no visible threat exists. Also, if available, a birdcall may draw other feathered friends out of hiding.  However, chances of the birds coming close enough, to get a detailed view, are highly unlikely.  Therefore, be sure to bring the proper tools.

Second, a proper tool is a good set of binoculars.  Avid watchers have a choice of three different styles. Porro prism binoculars have an angled design. Standing on the barrels, the figure M can be seen. The focusing mechanism, an external wheel, moves the eyepieces along an external barrel.  Although inexpensive, the Porro prism binoculars work well.  Next, Roof prism binoculars have two straight side-by-side barrels. Standing on the barrels, the figure H can clearly be visible. Roof prism binoculars have internal focusing adjusted by an external knob or wheel.  Narrow in body shape and generally waterproof, the binoculars are very durable and produce a larger image.  Finally, a more expensive pair of binoculars combines a digital camera with the benefits of a binocular; to allow for quick, close up pictures.

For the individual who prefers a traditional photo, a good camera, with a telephoto lens is a good choice.  A birdwatcher and photographer can get unbelievably close pictures from afar.  The detail is amazing. So, if a computer is not close by, take roll after roll of 35mm film and have the pictures processed later, without worrying about the camera memory getting full.

In summary, bird watching can be a refreshing and relaxing pastime, if properly prepared.  Learning to appreciate nature and the beauty of thousands of bird breeds. Walk into the world of birds, and in vivid color, appreciate the mannerisms and habits of an often-misunderstood species.
