A Lovely Landscape

Gardening is not simply planting fruits and vegetables for a fresh addition to every meal. Passionate gardeners practice an art form.  The scenic beauty reflects the planter's personality and creativity. With a raised garden, a rock garden, or a lovely landscape garden, a yard becomes a veritable showcase of talent and gorgeousness.

Raised gardens are an excellent choice for the physically challenged, and for added control of plant pests. In explanation, a raised garden begins with a framed plot of land.  Made of wood, the frame can be built to any desired height. Then, filled with nutrient enriched soil, simply plant the garden. Aboveground, elderly and handicapped individuals can experience the joy of planting seeds and nurturing the budding plants to fruition.  For people in wheelchairs, the frame can be constructed to a
safe height for bending over the garden. Properly placed in the landscape, the plot will be handicapped accessible from every side.

A raised garden is also great for the elderly gardener.  Many people give up the much-loved pastime, when arthritis and age prevent kneeling in the dirt.  With a raised garden, the problem is solved.  Building a bench into the frame will again make gardening an enjoyable experience.  Sitting on the edge, bending and stooping are totally unnecessary.  Also, gardeners will remain relatively tidy; laundering soiled clothes, and scraping muddy shoes will no longer be a hassle for individuals already challenged by physical limitations.

In addition to the physical benefits, a raised garden can also help control pest infestation. Planting in a box above ground discourages the natural creepy-crawlies.  While no garden will be totally pest free, many plant pirates will stay below the earth.

Dealing with the earth problems is one reason many individuals opt to plant a rock garden.  Especially in dryer climates, watering can become a budget-breaking experience.  In addition, weed and pest control become impossible chores, when working long days.  Thus, a rock garden is the answer.  To begin a good rock garden, planters will first lay down a layer of plastic, to discourage the growth of weeds.  Then, the plants chosen to strategically place amidst the rocks are generally hardy evergreens, or other plants needing little water and minimal care. Now, come the rocks.

Basically, rock choice is generally based upon budget and decorating choice.  Amazingly, rocks cost money.  Hand collecting enough rocks to supply a garden, and be a beautiful addition to the landscape, is virtually impossible. Purchase affordable rocks, complimenting the home and the surrounding area.

Finally, avid planters often choose landscape gardening. In addition to the fruits, vegetables, or flowers, the garden displays objects reflecting the personality of the cultivator.  For example, trellises are the usual choice for climbing vines.  However, for a western motif, a gardener may choose a wagon wheel. Why spend money on a trellis, if an old fence gate is available.  Also, to landscape the beautiful plants close to the ground, a little statue is a wonderful addition. Fountains are equally beautiful in a botanical environment. Essentially, a landscaped garden is only limited by imagination. The key is to display objects reflecting personality and ownership.

Actually, any garden should reflect the owner's personality and love for growing plants and enhancing the landscape.  Whether building a frame for a raised garden, a rock garden to conserve water and energy, or a landscaped garden with statues, props, trellises, or other pretty objects to compliment the beauty of the surrounding foliage, a garden should be a joy.  Growing food or a colorful yard, gardening should be a labor of love. As a hobby, stress reliever, display of beauty, or for saving money at the supermarket, gardening is definitely a source of pleasure.
