Greenhouse and Indoors Gardening

Gardening is an excellent means of landscaping a beautiful yard.  Many women and men enjoy working with plants, and watching the growth turn into fragrant, colorful foliage.  Not only is the end result rewarding, the process of cultivating, weeding, and watering the plants are a form of relaxation and a good way to unwind after a hard day at work. However, most people do not live in an optimal climate, and the growing season limits enjoying a favorite pastime to a few brief months. Therefore, individuals who enjoy gardening create a forest of plants in the home, or invest in a greenhouse, to enjoy cultivating and growing plants throughout the year.

Although the average gardener may not have the space or finances to build a greenhouse, indoor gardening can be equally satisfying.  For the novice,
herbs are an excellent beginner's garden.  The plants are fairly low maintenance, and need little care beyond soil, water, and sunlight.  People often choose to grow herbs in the kitchen. With a little light, a small pot of herbs will grow nicely, sitting on the kitchen counter.  Then, gardening gourmet cooks will have fresh flavorings handy.

For most people, houseplants are a decorative addition to any room.  For example, the bathroom is an optimal place to grow many houseplants.  The humidity of the shower is similar to a breath of fresh air to humans. Many living rooms have a variety of houseplants scattered throughout. The greenery gives the room a homey feel.  Likewise, the bedroom may have hanging plants, or plants by the window to accentuate a peaceful environment.

Plants growing in the house seem to have a relaxing affect for many people. In addition, plants are great for clearing the air.  Plants thrive on the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and give off clean life-giving oxygen in return.  For people living in big cities, or other polluted areas, plants literally clear the air.

However, despite the obvious positive attributes of houseplants, people should be aware of potential dangers.  Many plants are actually poisonous to people and pets.  For example, the aloe vera plant can cause contact dermatitis. The itchy rash can be maddening.  Also, the common heart-shaped philodendron leaves are poisonous.  People with small children and pets need to consider the possibility of a leaf being tasted. No one wants to think beautiful plants can be an environmental blessing and an ingestible disaster at the same time.  However, before purchasing houseplants, make sure the greenery is safe for the small and curious.

Although avid gardeners usually have beautiful plants growing inside and out, changing climates often preclude enjoying an outdoor garden throughout the year.  If space and budgets allow, many green-thumbed individuals decide a greenhouse the answer to continuing a growing hobby, regardless of the seasons. Greenhouses enable avid gardeners to grow fruit, vegetables, and gorgeous flowering plants twelve months a year.

To give the plants the best opportunity for growth during the winter months, the greenhouse should be facing toward the direction of the warmest sunshine during the day.  In addition, ventilation is extremely important.  Even in colder climates, the greenhouse doors can be opened during the day, to allow for fresh air.  However, leaving open doors after nightfall can be fatal for the best of plants.  Frost is a vicious adversary. An alternative ventilation method is hosing down the greenhouse and opening available vents.  In a climate-controlled environment, with the proper sunshine and ventilation, gardeners can grow wonderful vegetables and sweet smelling flowers 365 days a year.

In summary, growing plants is a wonderful pastime and a relaxing hobby for an avid gardener.  Nevertheless, outdoor climates put a frosty halt to outdoor greenery.  No problem!  Indoor plants can provide hours of gardening and visual relaxation.  With the curiosity of small children and pets in mind, green-thumbed individuals can find a plethora of wonderful plants to brighten every room in the house, while removing pollutants and giving off refreshing oxygen. If the house is not large enough to contain an insatiable love for growing vegetables and flowers, a climate-controlled greenhouse can ensure a year-round love for gardening.  Thus, avid gardeners can maintain the greenest of thumbs, even when the outdoors becomes a wintry white.
