A Hummingbird Haven

When many people think of feeding birds, the first thought goes to one of the smallest, quickest, and amazing bird on the planet-the hummingbird. With wings beating at approximately 55 beats per second, a "still" bird seems to hover in midair.  Aerodynamically, the hummingbird is a mystery to the average observer, although a pilot might be able to explain the awesome sight. Flitting from flower to flower, the little miracle is very difficult to observe, unless a haven has been established, to entice the feathery phenomenon to stay for a fantastic feast of flavorful sweets.  Avid hummingbird watchers start by making a veritable paradise and providing appetizing nectar.

To Catch a Thief

Squirrels are adorable, furry little creatures.  Fun to watch in their natural habitat, squirrels are resourceful, determined, and brave-all the qualities of a good thief. Feeding squirrels at the park can be a relaxing pastime.  Tempted with nuts, seeds, and even French fries, the little rodents will bravely come within a few feet of enthralled humans.  However, the cute little scavengers are the bane of a bird's existence.  Before the birds can enjoy a pleasant repast, the squirrels will take all the seeds, nuts, and grain to store for the winter.  After all, why work hard to provide for the long winter months, when a kind-hearted birdwatcher leaves goodies for the taking.  Other than giving in, and providing ample food for the birds and scavengers, purchasing or making squirrel-proof feeders is the only answer.

A Blooming Garden

A vegetable garden will yield a harvest for many meals, to please the taste buds and the tummy.  However, flowers are a feast for the eyes. Even with little to no yard, flowers can brighten any home. Requiring minimal space, flowers make excellent borders around the exterior of the home.  Also, window boxes can provide an excellent means of growing easily visible, colorful, and fragrant blooms. Whether the flowers are individual blossoms or blooming bushes, even the novice gardener can enhance the yard and home.

Pasta: A Versatile and Economical Food

After a busy day at work, rushing to pick the kids up from the sitter, and running the necessary errands, the last thing anyone feels like doing is spending hours in the kitchen fixing a meal.  Also, with the price of groceries rising, steak or pot roast is reserved for special occasions.  Consequently, creating tasty meals on a limited budget can be extremely challenging.  The question is: what can a person fix that the entire family will enjoy?  Answer: pasta.  With little time, effort, expense, and the versatility of pasta, the menu will include delectable delights both children and adults will enjoy.

Babies Having Babies

A generation ago, becoming an unwed parent was taboo, especially for the girl. Teenage pregnancies were quietly dealt with, and the baby was given up for adoption, or raised by an adult relative.  Today, with the availability of contraceptives and the prevalence of AIDS, most people would assume teenage pregnancy would be on the decline.  Quite the contrary! Instead, teenage pregnancies are on the rise in some communities.  Three factors are some of the reasons why babies are having babies:  social acceptance, lack of family values, and a low self esteem.
